How to Make the Most Out of Your Japanese Bath Experience
If you're a first-timer, there are a few things that you should bear in mind so you can make the most out of your Japanese bath experience. Here are some of them.
As courtesy and respect to other guests, you are required to take a bath or shower before you take a dip into the pool. Scrub your body to get rid of unwanted particles that may have stuck to your skin. As all Japanese bathhouses are well-equipped, you don't have to bring your own set of toiletries such as soap and scrubs.
As for noise, make sure that you don't make too much of it as a sign of respect to other bathers. If you are bathing in groups, you might want to choose a bathhouse that allows loud conversations and Japanese commentary among people.
Second, you can wear a swimsuit (or not).
Many facilities require that you take off all your clothes before you get into the water. But if you're not comfortable with this idea, there are always other establishments that allow you to wear a swimsuit.
Third, you must relax.
A hot spring bath is different from an ordinary dip in the pool. To totally reap its benefits, your body must relax and absorb the warmth of the bath. You can scrub if you want, but set aside some time to stay calm inside the water for a few minutes for maximum relaxation.
Fourth, pick an establishment with a good ambience and view.
There are many high-end establishments that have a great view and ambience. Though these establishments come with a high price, a romantic or breathtaking background gives you a more relaxed and more memorable bath.
Last, replenish after the bath.
Your body will be losing a lot of fluids during your bath, so it's imperative that you replenish after bathing. While a cup of green tea is highly recommended, you can choose to drink plenty of water or other beverages. Never ever make the mistake of trying the Japanese sake after your bath.
